OUR MONKEY MIND.

Our mind can play tricks on us. Keeping us occupied with a constant inner chatter, with thoughts about what might happen in the future, in the past, to another person, or what others might think of us. We easily go into a spiral of anxious, negative, thoughts. This processes stresses us & drains our energy a lot.

Why do we do it?

It's the purpose of our minds to constantly observe, analyse & think up stories to make sense of the world around us. To protect us from danger, to find food, love, shelter etc. So to some extent it's useful. It only becomes a problem when our 'monkey mind' takes over and these thoughts trigger emotions, and thus cause us to react very emotionally, or compulsively.

In just 1 day we have 30.000 thoughts, 115.200 heartbeats, and 25.000 breaths.

This all happens unconsciously. But why do we often let our beating drum of thoughts take over?

Through meditation, we shift the emphases from the mind to the heart & the breath. This helps to observe the thoughts. To realise we are not our thoughts.

Our thoughts are like breaths or heartbeats.

We need them, but they don’t define who we are.

PS. “Don't believe everything you think.”
